A Bunch Of Old Letters by Jawaharlal Nehru

A Bunch of Old letters written by pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Jawaharlal Nehru included these letters in this book, a mixed collection. Gathering them and selecting one for publication was not an easy task. How far this has been worthwhile, it is difficult for him to judge. Almost all of them belong to an era that now seems distant and long ago. With very few exceptions, these are letters written before the independence of India and they deal mainly with their internal problems and how they affected us.

Rereading them, they revive old controversies and bring back almost forgotten memories. They were mostly written in the twenties and thirties and early forties, he said, between the times of our freedom struggle and when he was not in prison.

What is the name of the first prime minister of independent India?

The letters recorded in this book were written during India’s freedom struggle and when the author, Jawaharlal Nehru, was not in prison. At that time Nehru’s correspondence and papers were not properly kept aside. What he had written was scattered and haphazard. Moreover, the police tortured him periodically and the documents he had were torn apart and confiscated.

After returning from a long prison term he would almost certainly find termites and other insects infesting his papers. After a few years friends helped put them in some order. When he recently went on a few-day vacation to the Kulu Valley in the Himalayas, he chose to compile these letters and publish them in book form.

At first his intention was to publish only the father of nation sri Mahatma Gandhi’s letters. Gradually added others and even gave some letters written by him because otherwise many references were difficult to understand. The format followed in this volume is chronological, although occasionally varied for clarity. He adds a few footnotes or other explanatory notes, but he fears that those who are not familiar with the Indian history of the period will not be able to understand some of the references in the letter.

Some of the names whose letters have been included in this book are – Sarojini Naidu, Motilal Nehru, M. L. Oakes, Mohanlal Karamchand Gandhi, Lala Lajpat Roy, Mahadev Desai, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Shaukat Ali, Sir Harcourt Butler, M. Mohammad Ali, J. M. Sengupta, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Annie Besant, Narendra Dev, G. F. Adams, M. A. Ansari etc.

Who is the first woman Prime Minister of India?

Some of these letters are from friends and colleagues who are still happily with him. They have been kind enough to allow him to publish them. In very few cases, it was not possible for him to obtain this permission before publication. He hoped they would forgive me for the liberties he was taking. He would like to express his gratitude to his many colleagues who have helped him at various stages of publishing this book. Indeed without that help he could not possibly have undertaken the task or completed it.
