Author Panchanan Ghoshal was the pioneer of police history and criminology in Bengali literature. He was born on 1st June 1908 in a zamindar family. He was born at Madral village in Naihati, North 24 Parganas, of India. He holds an MSc in Zoology and a PhD in Psychology. Criminology was a special interest. While working at Jorasanko police station, Rabindranath Tagore inspired him to write about crime and criminals. He retired as Deputy Inspector General in the Indian Police Service. He was the first Indian to receive a doctorate in criminal psychology. He was the founder editor of Calcutta Police Journal. He was associated with many philanthropic works like schools, libraries, charitable institutions, correction of criminals etc. He donated his own collection to the Crime Museum. He was not only India’s first criminologist, but also wrote many books on criminals.

During his student days, his short story Downey Samaj was published in Kallol newspaper. Later his writings were published in various newspapers. His books have also been published in Hindi, English and Oriya languages. Criminology in eight volumes written by him is one of the most important documentary books in the practice of Bengali criminology. He also practiced juvenile delinquency and labor science. One day a literary meeting was held in the house of Rabindranath Tagore at Thakurbari in Jorasanko. Prominent poets and writers are all sitting. That day, Panchanan Ghoshal also entered the Sahitya Sabha Hall and stood directly near Rabindranath. Rabindranath learned about his identity; he is the policeman of Jorasanko police station. Then he further asked, do you write anything? He said, write a social essay. This time, an article called ‘Neecher Samaj’ has been published in the ‘Kallol’ newspaper.

Their four-storied brick house was in Naihati Madral village. In every house and building, there were chandeliers up and down around the walls, lamps kept in niches. At one time there was caretaker and security gird too. All the seals were stolen from the large iron chest after the sharing of shares. Grandmother had a chest with a few copper pots filled with Akbari Mohar. The ark would make strange noises every hour. It worked like clockwork.

Ratanlal was a good swimmer. The robbers searched the whole forest but did not find him. The next morning the little boy returned home. Grandmother of Panchanan used to tell this story at the end, it is a true story, but Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay used it in a novel. Bankim Chandra is their relative. He is the cousin of Kamalapati who was grandfather of Panchanan. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay used to learn English from grandfather of Panchanan Ghoshal.

Madral village has a huge deep pond called ‘Kaladighi’ on about thirty-tree acers of land. It is mentioned in the novel ‘Indira’ written by Bankim Chandra. Panchanan Ghosal had occupied this forested area since the British period. He renovated the dilapidated Shiva temple there. Later, he built an Annapurna temple on top of the temple with the help of a businessman. He renovated the temples of various deities on the four sides of the Kaladighi up to the Dakatiya Kalimandir, and he also rebuilt the temples. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay often used to sit and write under an old banyan tree at a bank in Kaladighi. He decorated the place beautifully.

The incident of Panchanan coming to the police is also wonderful. In that context, he said, “His cousin Hiranmoy Ghoshal was the First Secretary in the Russian Embassy on behalf of the Government of India.” They two brothers went to Hooghly to meet Kazi Nazrul Islam. He did not know that there is a secret watch of Special Branch Intelligence Police deployed there. The news immediately reached the then police commissioner, Charles Taggart. Mr. Taggart at once sent for them and told his elder uncle not to let either of them go out of Calcutta. His elder uncle said, what will be the solution? Then Mr. Taggart said, ‘Put them into police.’ After that he had to go to the police training school.’ After that, he gradually managed to become a police officer, commissioner, and finally home anti-corruption by his own efforts. He received many awards for various heroic deeds.
