Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar wrote bengali story Shakuntala.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born on 26th September 1820 in Birsingha village of Medinipur district. His real name is Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay and he sometimes writes under the name Ishwar Chandra Sharma. His father was Thakurdas Bandyopadhyay and mother’s name was Bhagwati Devi. He was a prominent writer and educationist of Bengali literature. He is widely known as a renowned educationist and social reformer of the 19th century and the father of Bengali prose literature. His significant contribution as a social reformer of Bangladesh is acknowledged.
The book Shakuntala was compiled by the famous social reformer, Bengali linguist and writer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. He compiled Shakuntala in Bengali language, the episodic part of the play Abhijananshakuntalam by Mahakabi Kalidasa. Abhishanashakuntalam is the best drama written in Sanskrit by India’s greatest epic poet Kalidasa. Compiled the anecdotes of the best dramas of this book. In this anecdote one cannot expect to see the miraculous excellence of the original text. Those who have read Shakuntala in Sanskrit and will read this anecdote, will easily understand the beauty of these two hearts. And the author thinks that many people can criticize him in the introduction of Kalidasa and Shakuntala to the Sanskrit readers. In fact, by compiling this anecdote in Bengali, the author feels that he has insulted Kalidasa and Shakuntala. Hence his request to the readers not to test the excellence of Kalidasa’s Shakuntala by seeing the translated Shakuntala.
How did Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay become Vidyasagar?
He had immense knowledge in Bengali literature and Sanskrit language. He was conferred the title of Vidyasagar in 1839 AD by the ‘Hindu Law Committee’ for passing with great erudition and distinction in literature. Later in 1941, his name was mentioned in the certificate of Sanskrit College. From then on he was declared as Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar from Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay.
In 1955, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar took full initiative to establish new schools in different districts of Bengal, especially Nadia, Burdwan, Hooghly, Medinipur, etc. for the development of education, especially women’s education. Between late 1857 AD and May 1858, he was able to establish 35 schools. He gave special attention to women’s education. So he was able to establish several girls’ schools in different parts of Bengal.
Barnaparichay written by him to facilitate easy reading of Bengali language was published for the first time. The book Barnaparichay made the Bengali language easy to read. Among his works Sanskrit Grammar Upakramanika, Bangla Grammar Kaumudi’, Rijupatha, Betal Panchabinsati, Shakuntala, Sitar Banabas are particularly notable.
He has beautifully translated the Shakuntala saga of the Bengali book Abhishanashakuntalam into Bengali and made it suitable for Bengali speakers to read.
